Selected examples of projects funded through the Academic Federation Professional Development Award program.

1996-97 Jim Spearow (Assistant Researcher: Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior) learned techniques for mapping genes at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
1998-99 Tzipora Goldkorn (Associate Adjunct Professor: Internal Medicine - Pulmonary Division) developed an animal model to investigate signal transduction pathways induced by autoimmune antibodies.
1999-00 Alan Jassby (Researcher Ecologist: Environmental Science and Policy) along with a Humphrey Fellow from Burma (Myanmar), Myint Su, conducted a conservation-oriented review of the status of Inle Lake, the largest lake in Burma. They made a field trip to the lake, interviewed many locals, gathered all the technical literature they could find, and wrote a review paper that appeared in a UN-sponsored professional journal (Myint-Su and A. Jassby, Inle: A large Myanmar lake in transition, Lakes & Reservoirs: Research and Management 5:49-54 [2000]).
1999-00 Andrei Zalensky (Assistant Research Biochemist: Biological Chemistry) investigated the molecular characterization of telomeres in marine invertebrates at the University of Victoria, B.C.
2000-01 Anthony Cheung (Adjunct Professor: Medical Pathology) investigated the predictability of diabetes in siblings of pediatric diabetic patients by examining the small blood vessels of the white of the eye.
2001-02 Michael McCoy (Academic Administrator, Environmental Science & Policy) studied the processes used to make environmental policy decisions.
2001-02 William Kremen (Associate Adjunct Professor: Psychiatry) attained specialized skills and intensive training in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain.
2002-03 Lynette Hart (Academic Administrator, Center for Animal Alternatives) developed alternatives to the use of animals for teaching "Resources for Education in Biology."
2002-03 Ellen Dean (Academic Coordinator, Plant Biology and Vegetable Crops) did taxonomic research on a genus related to green peppers in the tomato family; herbarium specimen-based plant taxonomy experience for the curator of the UC Davis Herbarium.
2002-03 Michael Meier (Academic Administrator, Chemical Engineering & Materials Science) attended workshops on X-ray Powder Diffraction sponsored by the International Committee on Diffraction Data.
