Selected examples of projects funded through the Academic Federation Professional Development Award program.

1997-98 Kevin Roddy (Medieval Studies) used his leave to write a scholarly article Politics and Religion in Late Antiquity: The Roman Imperial Ceremony and the Christian Myth of the Harrowing of Hell (2000-01). He wouldn't have completed this essay without the quarter off.
1997-98 John Boe (Lecturer, English) took advantage of his first leave to write a book evaluating writing instruction in a historical context (Life Itself: Messiness Is Next to Goddessness and Other Essays).
1998-99 Gary Sue Goodman (Lecturer, English) used her leave to study journalism and work as a visiting fellow at Mother Jones.
2000-01 Pamela Major (Lecturer, English) investigated how college composition teachers can extend their outreach efforts through collaboration with K-12 public school teachers and has since launched the highly successful outreach program called “Writing Ambassadors,” which offers UCD students an internship opportunity while they teach in K-12 classrooms.
2002-03 Ellen Lange (Lecturer, Linguistics) aims to get the necessary technical training she needs so that she can create, on an on-going basis, computer-assisted grammar modules tailored for Linguistics 23, Advanced ESL (English as a Second Language) Composition. These materials would be used in the classroom, in the Language Learning Center, and on-line by students and instructors in the ESL Program.
2003-04 John Boe (Lecturer, English) will use his second award to conduct interviews with renowned composition scholars for Writing on the Edge, an interdisciplinary composition journal for which John is the editor. WOE is published here at UC Davis and comes out in spring and fall.
