About the Award

The University of California is dedicated to teaching, research, and service. While much of the University’s service is carried out through established programs such as University Extension, individual faculty members engage in an extensive and diverse range of service activities. In the 1989-90 academic year, the UC Davis Academic Senate established an award to recognize these contributions. The Distinguished Scholarly Public Service Award is presented annually to recognize significant contributions to the world, nation, state and community through distinguished scholarly public service. Scholarly public service is organized activity that extends a faculty member’s expertise in teaching, research, or professional competence beyond the university campus and into local, state, national, or international public arenas. For purposes of this Award, distinguished scholarly public service is the unpaid, sustained and direct extension of a faculty member’s disciplinary expertise to the public and non-profit section. As you will see from the descriptions of the contributions of the Award recipients, the faculty at UC Davis have made contributions on local, state, national and international levels in fields as diverse as law, medicine, chemistry, physics, natural resources, art, and design.
