Professor Aguilar-Gaxiola’s distinguished public service work in the field of mental health is recognized locally, nationally, and internationally. Among many of his accomplishments are the following: establishing the Center for Reducing Health Disparities at UC Davis in order to improve the health of Sacramento’s diverse population, leading efforts to reduce mental health disparities for under-served communities through the Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission for the State of California, co-leading Mental Health America’s efforts to help pass federal legislation in the U.S. 110th Congress to achieve mental health insurance parity, receiving several prestigious awards for his service, and serving as the unpaid Coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean for the World Health Organization’s World Mental Health Consortium in order to uncover global correlates for mental, substance and behavioral disorders.
