Professor Mench’s outstanding service focuses on the assessment and improvement of animal welfare. For the past ten years, Professor Mench has served as a member and/or officer of the Board of Trustees and as a member of the Council of Accreditation for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International. This private, nonprofit organization promotes the humane treatment of animals in science through voluntary accreditation and assessment of programs. Professor Mench’s service work also involves helping farm animal producers, like the United Egg Producers, develop and implement animal care standards, and assisting the two major retail trade groups representing supermarkets and fast-food restaurants in the creation of a national farm animal care and handling program.
